The fence is the part of the yard that touches the house
After 2018, nobody on the Ridge needs to be told that a fence can carry fire. What is worth spelling out is the specific mechanism, because it changes one decision rather than all of them: what the fence is made of in the first five feet next to the structure.
The workhorse. Galvanized pipe set in concrete, fabric stretched tight, top rail or top wire depending on what the fence has to survive. It goes 4 feet around a dog run and 12 feet around a pickleball court, and the shop stocks the black vinyl coated version for anyone who wants it to disappear into the landscape.
How a fence ignites a house
Embers land in the fine fuel at the base of a wood fence, or in the gap between two weathered boards, and they smolder. A fence is a continuous horizontal wick, and it runs from wherever it started directly to the wall it is attached to. Fire investigators have documented it repeatedly: the structure was defended, the fence was not, and the fence brought fire to it.
This is why the guidance has narrowed to a specific place. Not "do not build wood fences." The first five feet.
Zone 0, and why 2026 matters
California defensible space is measured in three bands out from the structure: Zone 0 is the first five feet, Zone 1 runs to thirty, Zone 2 to a hundred. Zone 0 is the strictest, and it is the newest. Assembly Bill 3074, signed in 2020, directed the Board of Forestry to write ember-resistant rules for that first five feet, and those rules carry an enforcement date in 2026.
The idea is that within five feet of the wall there should be nothing that can catch an ember and hold it: no bark mulch, no stacked firewood, no dead plant material, and no combustible fence tying into the structure. Reporting on the rulemaking has been consistent on two points that matter to a fence owner - existing fences are not grandfathered, and property owners in high fire severity zones get a compliance window measured in a few years, not decades.
Confirm the current requirement and your deadline with your local fire district or CAL FIRE before you plan around a date. The design response does not change either way, and doing it at replacement time costs nothing extra.
What to actually build
Run a non-combustible section where the fence meets the house, and use whatever you like beyond it. Five to ten feet of ornamental iron, chain link, or vinyl at the structure, then wood for the rest of the run if wood is what you want in the yard.
From the patio it still reads as a wood fence. From an ember's point of view, the path to the wall is broken.
- Ornamental iron: entirely non-combustible, and the section at the house can be a gate, which you probably wanted anyway.
- Chain link: non-combustible, cheapest option, and black vinyl coated is unobtrusive.
- Vinyl: will melt and deform in high heat but does not carry flame the way wood does. Better than wood, not as good as steel.
- Metal gate posts throughout: even on a wood fence, steel posts remove the vertical fuel at each post.
- Keep the base clear: gravel or bare soil under the fence line rather than bark, and no firewood stacked against it.
Existing fences
You do not have to tear out a good fence. Cutting the wood run back and installing a metal section at the house is a short job and it addresses the specific risk. If you are rebuilding a fence anyway, build it this way from the start.

Dates have moved before, so confirm yours with your fire district. If you are replacing a fence anyway, building it Zone 0 friendly now costs nothing extra and takes the question off the table.
Carriers in high fire severity zones increasingly ask about defensible space, and some inspect for it. Whether a fence specifically is called out varies by carrier. Ask yours, because the answer can be worth real money on a premium.
Not the way steel does. Vinyl will soften, melt, and deform under radiant heat, but it does not sustain flame and carry it along the run the way a wood fence does. For the first five feet, metal is the better answer.
Yes, and most people do. The point is the connection to the structure, plus keeping fine fuel out from under the fence line. Wood on the property line, well away from the house, is a different situation from wood bolted to the siding.
